Attendance

The attendance procedures are listed below. We ask that you, as a parent, become familiar with these procedures. Please remember that regular attendance is essential for your student’s learning and is the basis for success. Students are expected to attend all classes as assigned daily.

ALL DAY ABSENCES:
If your child is absent all day due to illness, dental or doctor appt., etc., please send a note with your child to verify the absence, or call the Attendance Staff within the first 3 days of the absence. Otherwise, the absence could count as a truancy. Please provide the following information: Note should include the following: Student’s first and last name, student’s ID number, date of absence and reason, parent/guardian full name and signature, and phone number, in case we need to contact you.

PARTIAL DAY ABSENCES:
(Student comes in late (more than 30 minutes) to school) If your child is late (more than 30 minutes) due to a medical appointment, please send your child with the note given by the Doctor’s office to the attendance office (A parent note will work as well).

LEAVING EARLY DURING SCHOOL DAY: “PERMIT TO BE ABSENT”:
If it becomes necessary for the student to leave school for any reason during the day: Send a note to the Attendance Office with your student (You may request a permit in advance). Parents/guardians must be specific of the date, the reason, and time the student needs to leave the school campus. The student can then pick up a “Permit to Be Absent” at the Attendance Office. Failure to request a permit may result in an automatic truant!

LATE TO CLASS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY:
If a student is late to class due to a meeting with a proper staff member or because of a delay in our Transportation Department he/she will be excused with proper confirmation from such staff/department. If a student is late due to being irresponsible he/she will be marked as (unexcused) tardy.

HEALTH OFFICE:
(If the Health Office is closed, students must report to the Attendance Office) When a student does not feel well, the student should:
1. Report to class and request a pass from the teacher to go to the Health Office.
2. If the student needs to go home due to illness, the Health Aide will contact a parent/guardian, or the emergency contact, to receive authorization to send the student home. The student will be given a “Permit to Be Absent” by the Health Aide.
3. If a student is ill and NO ONE CAN BE REACHED, they may rest in the Health Office for a brief period or return to class.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD A STUDENT LEAVE CAMPUS WITHOUT PERMISSION! SCHOOL IS A CLOSED CAMPUS. STUDENTS MUST HAVE A “PERMIT TO BE ABSENT”. IF A STUDENT LEAVES CAMPUS, THEY MAY RECEIVE A CITATION FROM THE SALINAS POLICE DEPARTMENT AND BE REQUIRED TO APPEAR BEFORE THE DISTRICT. ATTORNEY OR COURT.

WARNING: TRUANT ABSENCES MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.

Parents please be aware of the attendance procedures and understand that attendance is crucial for your student’s success in high school.

Thank you.
A2A (Attention to Attendance) Letters

A2A (Attention to Attendance) Letters

A2A is an automated program by the Salinas Union High School District that generates letters to parents/guardians when students have reached a level of excused, unexcused, and possible truancy patterns.

The purpose of the letters is to inform parents/guardians of a student that learning time is lost when a student is absent from school. Students must have good habits and reduce absenteeism which will affect their learning in the classroom.

Parents/Guardians receive two types of letters when a certain number is reached on a student’s attendance:

Truancy Letters (Opportunity to Educate)
  • Inform of policy when a student will not be at school (verifying the reason for absence)
  • Discuss potential outcomes if attendance doesn’t improve immediately
  • Level 1 Letters is triggered by 3+ Truant Events
  • Level 2 Letters by 6+ Truant Events
  • Student Conference Letter (Meet with Attendance/Admin in regards to truancy-parent/guardian and student)
  • Level 3 by 9+ Truant Events
  • Meeting with District Attorney for Truancy (parent/guardian and student)

Excessive Excused Absence Letters (Opportunity to Offer Help)
  • Studies show that parents often underestimate how many days have been missed
  • Students may have unknown barriers- resources may be needed
  • Excessive Excused Letter 1 is triggered by 5+ Excused Events
  • Excessive Excused Letter 2 by 10+ Excused Events
  • Graduation requirement (to walk the line) requires 85% attendance every year in high school. (ie Students should not miss 26 or more days in a school year, this is why these letters are mailed)

Before these letters, parents/guardians receive the following information:
  • Auto-Dialer for attendance and/or tardies the day of (if you have blocked the school number it will not go through)
  • The Attendance Office calls parents/guardians (their job is to verify the absence/tardy, ask you questions about the student, and direct you to staff if you need additional resources).
    • Their job is to gather information that may sound invasive. If you believe you have a personal matter, please contact the student’s school counselor to disclose.
  • Talking points: The attendance office may use text/email if a phone call does not go through.

It is very important to email or call the attendance when your student is absent to verify.
